## DAY 15, Boise ID to Crescent City, CA
[[#ENDSUMMARY]]

### Monday July 25, 2022

WHat a great vit and arty in Boise. Today need to get to the Pacific Ocean. Probably gonna 12 hours of driving (with breaks). Our route is basically route 84 North out of Boise and cross the Snake River into Ontario, Oregon. Then find our way south again on route 25 then 395 and then the Christmas Valley Highway and keep going and find Silver LAke Rooad and then keep going and find Crater Lake. Stop at Crater Lake. Then continue on route 62 down to route 234 through Sams Valley and to the Pacific Highway and rested at Grants Pass Oregan. Decision made, continue through Grants Pass to the Redwood Highway (route199) over the Siskiyou Mountains into Crescent City, California and the Pacific Ocean.

### Crater Lake
This was our first stop today for an excursion. Roughly 400 miles and 8 hours. Late Afternoon. WOW. The pictures of the lake dont show how wide this lake really is. The lake diameter averages 5 miles. It is a 20 mile trip around the rim. The lake is below the rim by 2000 feet cliffs, and the lake is another 2000 feet deep. Speechless.
We wandered around the park. Got a little too close to the edge once or twice. Checked out the on site lodge, and got back along our way..

The crater [CALDERA]() was formed 7,700 years ago, when a violent eruption of a 12,000 foot tall mountain peak named Mount Mazama exploded. The mountain is about 8000 feet elevation the lake is at about 6000 feet elevation.Wow! The mountain lost 4000 ft of mass in that explosion. I dont imagine that the little island is the old peak that dropped down, but maybe in a Looney Tune cartoon, thats how it happened.

### Its not even a CRATER!!
[CRATER Lake is NOT A CRATER. At least to scientists](https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/types-calderas/). Craters are formed by the outward explosion of rocks and other materials from a volcano. Calderas are formed by the inward collapse of a volcano. Crater Lake was formed by the inward collapse of the volcano.

### Grants Pass
 [Redwood Highway (route199)](http://www.gribblenation.org/2020/04/us-route-199.html)
Boise is at 2700 feet. Crater Lake was at 6,000 feet.
Grants Pass is at about 1000 feet elevation. Going over the Siskiyou Mountains() looks like we will go up to 2200 feet and then down the otherside to ZERO in crescent city at the pacific ocean!.

### Crescent City
So we finally arrived about 1100 PM. Drive up the otion and then went looking for a hotel. Not many had availability and many would not take a pet. We finally got settled into a nice smaller/older roadside motel in town.

DAY 16 Tuesday JUL 26
This was our full day in Crescent city and the nearby Redwoods. This was a packed day and a lot of fun.

Got a nail in my tire near our hotel, all shops closed. Well see how flat the tire is in the morning.
